Large fifth-wheel RVs can have demanding electrical loads and limited space for high-current equipment. In this JHC Solar video, John and Paula House walk through an installation on a Momentum 397THS using parallel Victron inverters and heated Battle Born batteries.

What is an integrated RV power system?

An integrated RV power system coordinates energy storage, charging, power conversion, circuit protection, distribution and monitoring. Each component is selected as part of the same electrical design rather than as an isolated upgrade.

That coordination matters when an RV uses multiple inverters or a large battery bank. Current can be substantial on the DC side, so cable length, conductor size, busbar ratings, fusing, disconnects and equipment layout all affect performance and serviceability.

Why use parallel inverters?

Compatible inverters can be configured in parallel to increase available output and share load. The design requires more than connecting two devices together. Equipment must support parallel operation, be configured correctly and be installed with coordinated AC and DC protection.

Parallel inverters may make sense when the intended loads exceed the capability of a single unit or when the design calls for a specific power architecture. They are not automatically necessary for every fifth wheel.

Heated lithium batteries in cold conditions

The JHC Solar video identifies heated Battle Born batteries in this project. Battery charging behavior changes at low temperatures, and lithium batteries should be operated within manufacturer limits. Heating features can help manage cold-weather charging when integrated and monitored correctly.

Cold-weather planning should also consider battery location, insulation, ventilation requirements, standby consumption and the temperatures the RV will encounter while stored or occupied.

Equipment layout is part of system performance

Large electrical systems need accessible, protected mounting locations. Good layout can shorten cable runs, support ventilation, reduce accidental contact and make future inspection easier.

Before installation, evaluate:

  • compartment dimensions and door clearance
  • structural support for equipment and batteries
  • cable routing and bend radius
  • heat sources and ventilation
  • water, road debris and storage hazards
  • access to fuses, breakers, disconnects and communication ports

The cleanest-looking layout is not always the safest or easiest to service. Function comes first.

Plan from the loads backward

Start with the equipment the RV owner wants to operate, how long it will run and whether loads may operate together. Then select inverter capacity, battery storage and charging sources around that use.

This process helps avoid two common problems: an oversized inverter without enough battery or cable capacity, and a large battery bank without enough charging capability to recover after use.

Does every Momentum RV need parallel inverters?

No. Inverter configuration should follow the load calculation, desired redundancy, available space and equipment requirements for that particular RV.

Why use heated lithium batteries in an RV?

Some heated batteries are designed to help manage charging in low temperatures. Exact operation and limits depend on the product, so follow manufacturer instructions.

Can Victron equipment work with Battle Born batteries?
