List the appliances and devices you expect to use each day, including their wattage and estimated run time. Separate essential loads from conveniences. Heating elements and air conditioners generally demand far more energy than lights, water pumps and electronics.

2. How long do you want to camp without hookups?

Battery storage should be planned around the desired time between charging opportunities. Extra battery capacity can increase useful run time, but it must still be replenished.

3. How will the batteries recharge?

Solar may be the primary source, but weather, shade and short winter days affect production. Shore power, a generator and DC-to-DC alternator charging can provide additional paths when they are compatible with the RV and battery bank.

4. Where will the equipment fit?

Roof space, compartment dimensions, ventilation, cable routes, weight and service access all influence the final design.

Solar, batteries and inverter sizing work together

A large inverter can operate higher-demand appliances, but it also places higher current demands on the battery bank and DC wiring. A large battery bank provides storage, but undersized charging sources may take too long to refill it. A large solar array needs a compatible controller and appropriate conductors and protection.
